Privacy policy
tmux.app has no accounts, no sign-up and no forms, so we do not ask you for personal data. The site does load Google Analytics and Ezoic advertising, which use cookies and similar technologies. This page lists exactly what runs, why, and how to control it.
Who we are
tmux.app is an independent documentation site about tmux, the terminal multiplexer. In this policy, "we" and "us" mean the people who run tmux.app, and "you" means anyone who visits it. For any privacy question or request, email hello@tmux.app.
What we collect ourselves
tmux.app is a static website: every page is a plain HTML file. There are no user accounts, logins, comment systems, newsletters, contact forms or payment pages, and no database of visitors. We do not ask for your name or email address and we do not sell personal information.
The only personal data we receive directly is what you send us by email. If you write to hello@tmux.app, we see your email address and whatever you include, and we use it only to read and answer your message. We do not add you to a mailing list or pass your email on. We keep the conversation only as long as it is useful for handling your message (for example, until a correction is published), and you can ask us to delete it at any time.
The guides, the config generator and the playground on the home page run entirely in your browser. Nothing you type into them is sent to us. tmux itself runs on your own machine; we never see your terminal, sessions or files.
Third-party services at a glance
These are all the outside services the site loads. Each one receives your IP address and basic browser information when your browser contacts it, because that is how the web works.

The site's own fonts, styles, scripts and search index are served from tmux.app itself, not from a font or script CDN.
Hosting: Cloudflare
tmux.app is hosted on Cloudflare. When you open a page, Cloudflare receives the request from your browser, including your IP address, the address of the page, the referring page, your browser's user agent and the time. Cloudflare uses this to deliver the page, keep the site available and block attacks, and keeps request logs for a limited time for operations and security. We do not combine these logs with any other data or use them to identify visitors.
Analytics: Google Analytics 4
Every page loads Google Analytics 4 (measurement ID G-TVXE569PEB) from googletagmanager.com. It tells us how many people visit, which pages they read, how they arrived (for example from a search engine or a link), and broad facts such as country, device type, browser and screen size. The site also sends one custom event, copy_code, with the page path when you press a Copy button on a code block, so we can see which commands people actually use.
Google Analytics sets first-party cookies on tmux.app (named _ga and _ga_<ID>) to tell a returning browser from a new one. How we have set it up:
- Google Signals is off, and the property is not linked to Google Ads.
- Event-level data is kept for 2 months, the shortest retention setting GA4 offers. Aggregated reports (such as daily page views) are kept longer.
- We use the reports only to improve the site. We do not try to identify individual visitors.
Google processes this data under its own terms; see how Google uses information from sites that use its services. You can block Google Analytics on all sites with Google's opt-out browser add-on or with a content blocker. The site works the same either way.
Advertising: Ezoic
tmux.app is funded by ads served through Ezoic Inc. Every page loads Ezoic's ad script (ezojs.com) and its analytics script (ezoicanalytics.com). Ezoic decides which ads to show and works with advertising partners, including Google, to fill the ad slots.
Ezoic and its partners may use cookies, device identifiers, pixels and similar technologies to show ads, limit how often you see the same ad, measure whether ads were seen or clicked, prevent ad fraud, and, where you allow it, show ads based on your interests. The information they may process includes your IP address and approximate location, browser and device details, the page you are on, and how you interact with the ads.
We do not give Ezoic or its partners any information about you beyond what your browser sends when it loads their scripts. Ads do not influence the content or recommendations on this site; see how the site is funded.
Ezoic's own disclosures for this site, including its partners and the cookies they use, are below. They are loaded by Ezoic and kept up to date by them.

Consent: Gatekeeper
Before the other tags, every page loads Gatekeeper, Ezoic's consent management platform (from gatekeeperconsent.com). Depending on where you are, it shows a consent message the first time you visit, where you can accept, reject or choose which purposes and partners may use your data. Gatekeeper stores your choice in your browser and passes it to Ezoic and its ad partners, so they know whether they may use cookies for things such as personalized ads.
To change your choice later, use the consent settings button or link if Gatekeeper shows one on the page. You can always clear the cookies and site data for tmux.app in your browser; Gatekeeper then asks you again on your next visit.
Video: Humix (open.video)
A few guide pages include a short tutorial video. The player is provided by Humix, Ezoic's video platform, and loads from open.video only on pages that have a video. The player may set cookies, measure playback and show video ads, under the open.video privacy policy. Pages without a video do not load it.
What we store in your browser
tmux.app itself stores only your display preferences, in your browser's localStorage. These values never leave your device: they are not sent to us or to anyone else, and they are not used for tracking.

To remove them, clear the site data for tmux.app in your browser settings. The site falls back to its defaults. Site search also runs in your browser: it downloads a list of pages from tmux.app and matches what you type locally, so your search terms are not sent anywhere.
Your choices
- Consent: accept or reject ad and analytics cookies in the Gatekeeper message, and change your mind later as described in Consent.
- Browser controls: block third-party cookies, clear cookies, or use a content blocker. Every page still works; only the ads and analytics stop.
- Google Analytics: use Google's opt-out add-on.
- Interest-based ads: manage Google's ad personalization in Google ad settings, and other participating companies at aboutads.info (US) or youronlinechoices.eu (EU).
Your rights (GDPR, UK GDPR, CCPA)
Depending on where you live, you have rights over your personal data.
EU, EEA and UK (GDPR, UK GDPR)
You can ask to access, correct or delete your data, to restrict or object to its use, and to receive it in a portable format. Where we rely on consent (ads and analytics cookies), you can withdraw it at any time through Gatekeeper. Our legal basis for hosting logs and answering your emails is our legitimate interest in running the site and replying to you. You can also complain to your local data protection authority.
California and other US states (CCPA/CPRA)
You can ask what personal information is collected about you, ask for it to be deleted or corrected, and opt out of the "sale" or "sharing" of personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising, which is how the law treats some ad cookies. Use the opt-out choices in Gatekeeper where shown, or email us. We will not treat you differently for using these rights.
To make a request, email hello@tmux.app. Because we hold almost no personal data ourselves (only emails you have sent us), most requests about ads or analytics are handled by the providers themselves. We will tell you what we hold, act on what is in our control, and point you to the right provider for the rest. Data processed by Google, Ezoic or Cloudflare may be transferred to and stored in the United States and other countries under those companies' own safeguards.
Children
tmux.app is written for developers and system administrators and is not aimed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 (or under 16 in the EU). If you believe a child has sent us personal data, email hello@tmux.app and we will delete it.
Changes and contact
If we add, remove or change a service that handles visitor data, we update this page and its "Updated" date at the top. This version reflects the scripts the site loads as of October 28, 2026.
